When a camera is integrated with the Spot Intelligent Video Recorder (IVR), the IVR consumes a continual video data stream via the Real-Time Streaming Protocol (RTSP). You can manually integrate cameras that exist outside the same broadcast domain, such as over VPN, MPLS, or the internet, or in a different VLAN, provided the traffic is routable, facilitating their addition to the Dashboard.
Direct Connection Between IVR and Camera (Recommended)
When the camera and Spot IVR exist in the same broadcast domain, a direct data stream from the camera to the Spot IVR is established. This connection typically routes through a switch and is common to all cameras auto-discovered within the system.
Being in the same broadcast domain allows the IVR to access the camera's MAC address, enabling brand identification, a key aspect for default credentials and RTSP Path setup.
To simplify the establishment of direct connections, Spot AI's Business and Enterprise IVR models come equipped with two Ethernet ports and support VLAN configurations.
Routed Connection Between IVR and Camera (Not recommended)
In instances where a camera is manually added and resides in a different broadcast domain (be it over VPN, MPLS, the internet, or an unconfigured VLAN on the Spot IVR), traffic routes through the default gateway. This can potentially lead to performance degradation on the default gateway, contingent on the volume of traffic streamed through it. Hence, it's recommended to stream directly from cameras to the Spot IVR to circumvent potential performance issues.
When video from a camera is ingested via the internet, it requires a continuous stream of data across the ISP internet connection, effectively reducing the total available throughput on that ISP internet connection.
As the camera doesn't share the same broadcast domain as the Spot IVR, the IVR can't access the camera's MAC address. This impedes Spot's ability to auto-authenticate the camera or auto-apply the RTSP path for the camera. Moreover, should the camera's IP alter, manual reconfiguration would be necessary in the dashboard."
